A family confronts a long-held secret in It Turns Blue (2023), the powerful and poignant drama short film from director Shadi Karamroudi. Pari covers up domestic violence when her brother beats up his 3 year old daughter.
A tense, morally complex chamber piece, It Turns Blue (Abi Mishavad) drama short film takes place almost entirely inside a modest Iranian apartment — yet its emotional stakes feel enormous. Written, directed, and produced by Shadi Karamroudi, this 16‑minute short uses the intimate space to explore family loyalty, moral compromise, and the impossibility of hiding the truth forever.
The film opens on Morteza, painting a wall a bright, almost playful blue 🎨 while his toddler daughter Raha giggles nearby. He encourages her to press her paint‑covered palms against the wall — a moment of messy joy.
But when Raha tosses his phone into the paint, the mood shifts. We don’t see the violence, but the aftermath is clear: the child is hurt.
Panicked, Morteza calls his sister Pari. She arrives to find Raha with visible injuries and their mother due to pick her up soon.
Pari’s plan is quick and calculated:
For a while, it works. But as the clock ticks and the mother’s arrival looms, the weight of the lie grows heavier. The title’s meaning becomes literal and metaphorical — bruises bloom, and the truth, like a bruise, will inevitably surface.
Pros
Cons
It Turns Blue is about the lies we tell to protect the people we love — and how those lies can stain us just as deeply as the truth. Karamroudi doesn’t offer easy answers; instead, she leaves us with the uneasy knowledge that sometimes, doing “the right thing” for family can mean doing the wrong thing for everyone else.
