The Unknown Man Short Film (L’homme inconnu) is Anthony Schatteman’s 23-minute 16mm drama about a blocked writer on the Côte d’Azur. Cast, themes, festivals, how to watch.
A writer goes to the French Riviera for inspiration and finds a stranger on a cliff instead. The Unknown Man (original title L’homme inconnu) is a quiet, sunlit Belgian short that grew into a small festival favorite. It was made by the director who later premiered Young Hearts at the Berlinale.

I could not confirm an official trailer link, so I haven’t embedded one. Check the film’s Instagram page, listed on its Moviefone entry, and the distributor’s channel for promotional clips before publishing. The film is only about 23 minutes long, so most viewers go straight to the full version.
The film was distributed by GagaOOLala, a streaming platform for LGBTQ+ stories. If you enjoy it, Schatteman’s other shorts are a natural next watch: Kiss Me Softly (2012), Follow Me (2015), Hello, Stranger (2016) and Petit Ami (2017).
Spoiler-free.
It is the end of the 1970s, and a Belgian writer travels to the fashionable Côte d’Azur, hoping the resort town and the sea will inspire him. The writer, Louis, is drawn to a young man in a yellow swimsuit nearby, and a friendship begins. The festival description teases that, as for the rest, every other word would be a spoiler. What matters is that Louis’s fascination with the stranger turns into something more consuming than a holiday acquaintance, and the film’s tagline, “A dangerous fascination,” points the way.
Context matters here. His first short, Kiss Me Softly, won awards at festivals worldwide, so festival programmers already knew his name.
The short sits in a clear line in Schatteman’s work. His official biography describes a recurring thread of young people and their relationships, with burgeoning sexuality and homoeroticism, told in a stylised way with little dialogue and attention to hard-to-express emotions. The Unknown Man shifts that perspective: the observing character is an older man, and the setting is a retro Riviera summer instead of a contemporary Belgian town.
Public information on the writing process is thin, and I found no interview detailing the film’s inspiration. If you need an origin angle beyond the above, the director’s own social posts and festival Q&As are the best primary sources.
The film was shot on 16mm in a real Riviera town, which gives it warm grain and a tactile, period feel that suits a late-1970s setting. One reviewer praised the seductive close-ups in the sunscreen sequence, and another pointed to its “amazing production for a short film.” A critic on a queer film blog described the Côte d’Azur as gorgeous yet strangely cold, which captures the tension between the postcard setting and Louis’s unease. The restrained dialogue, a Schatteman trademark, lets glances and body language carry the story.
Coverage is mostly from viewers and niche blogs, not major trade outlets. Audience reactions on Letterboxd are mixed to positive: some call it seductive and beautifully shot, while one dismissive review files it among “pretentious” gay shorts. The overall score of about 3.3 out of 5 suggests a film that divides viewers. One review said the film made them want to see more of Schatteman’s work after Young Hearts, which shows how his later success has drawn new viewers to his shorts.
I couldn’t confirm a free full-length upload, so verify current availability before publishing this section.
Anthony Schatteman, born in 1989, graduated from the KASK School of Arts in Ghent and later earned a master’s in Film Studies and Visual Culture at the University of Antwerp. His shorts run from Kiss Me Softly (2012) to L’homme inconnu (2021), and he also worked on series including 2DEZIT and Northern Lights.
His feature debut came next. Young Hearts had its world premiere on February 17, 2024 at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival, where it competed for the Crystal Bear for Best Film. Geert Van Rampelberg, the lead of The Unknown Man, appears in it, and the shorts now read as an early study of the sensitivity and visual restraint that run through his feature.
